Crawley Innovation Centre officially opened in 2025 but from the moment Crawley Borough Council purchased the building and the refurbishment began in 2024, creating a building with excellent environmental credentials was always top of mind.
Situated in the heart of the Manor Royal Business District, the building is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and boasts high sustainability and energy efficiency standards. This includes solar panels on the roof, air-sourced heat pumps for heating and cooling, electric vehicle charging points in the car park, as well as rubbish recycling points dotted throughout the building.
Not only this, but the building was refurbished by Morgan Sindall Construction’s Southern Home Counties Business and from the outset, all waste from the pre-existing site and throughout construction was 100% reused or recycled. This created a carbon reduction of over 110 tons, equivalent to the annual heating of 37 homes.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the centre now aims to directly benefit up to 40 businesses, bringing an economic boost to the town.
The centre is now managed by Oxford Innovation Space, the UK’s largest operator of innovation centres, which supports more than 1,000 early-stage and scale-up businesses across a network of 30+ centres in the UK and Ireland. Led by Centre Manager, Shelley Furey, who oversees day-to-day operations and is the first point of contact for any business interested in joining the community. Shelley is also ensuring the building’s green credentials are adhered to and continue to progress for many years to come.
