Running a business can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with a unique set of pressures. Long hours, financial responsibility and the constant need to make decisions can take a toll on your mental wellbeing. Mental Health Awareness Week runs this week (11-18 May) so we thought it was a timely reminder to pause and prioritise your own wellbeing as much as you do to your business.
Priority one – Set boundaries
One of the most effective things you can do is set boundaries. When you run your own business, it is easy for work to spill into evenings and weekends. Creating clear working hours and sticking to them where possible helps protect your time and prevents burnout. Even small changes, like switching off email notifications after a certain time, can make a noticeable difference.
Priority two – You are not alone
It is also important to recognise that you do not have to do everything alone. Many business owners fall into the trap of trying to manage every aspect themselves. Delegating tasks, outsourcing where needed, or simply asking for advice with other business owners can relieve pressure and give you space to think more clearly.
Priority three – Take breaks
Building in regular breaks throughout your day is another simple but powerful habit. Stepping away from your desk, getting some fresh air, or taking a short walk can help reset your focus and reduce stress levels. Productivity is not about working non-stop; it is about working smarter.
Priority four – Connect with others
Connection plays a big role in mental wellbeing too. Running a business can sometimes feel lonely, so making time to speak and meet with mentors or fellow business owners can provide reassurance and perspective. Sharing challenges often makes them feel more manageable.
Priority five – Be realistic
Finally, be realistic with your expectations. Not every day will be productive, and not every decision will be perfect. Giving yourself permission to step back, reflect, and learn is all part of running a business.
Looking after your mental wellbeing is not a luxury, it is essential. By making small, consistent changes you can create healthier ways of working that support you and your business in the long term.
